Amphorae
Amphorae: Jars and Tanks
In this category of pottery, two types are identified, the first type is jars, also called amphorae. The second type is large jars, known in Latin as dolia.
They are designed for the transport and storage of materials, whether agricultural crops such as wheat, cereals and corn or processed goods such as liquids: wine, oils and products resulting from the process of salting fish.
The shapes of the pottery vary according to the periods, but also according to use. Jars are distinguished by the presence of two handles and a neck narrower than the body, which is usually oval, cylindrical or circular. The capacity of the jars is greater than or equal to about 20 liters. As for the dolia, they are significantly larger and are used for storage, with a capacity ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 liters, in which oils, cereals and wine are stored. They are mostly found installed on the ground because of their large size.
